Why You Should Try Putting Butter In Your Coffee

There's been a lot of talk in the news recently about fat. Trans fats are getting banned, statins are getting pushed and at the same time, our understanding of saturated fat as part of a healthy diet is changing, seemingly daily.

Recently, I was speaking at a conference in California and it was the one topic you couldn't get away from. One of the other speakers at the conference was MindBodyGreen blogger Dr. David Perlmutter, who very eloquently described the science behind why you need fat for brain health and a how our modern diets, with grains replacing fat as a major calorie source, have a negative impact on the brain.
This is leading to an epidemic of neurodegenerative disorders like Parkinson’s disease and Alzheimer's. With over 251 studies included in his book, Grain Brain, the evidence was hard to ignore. We all likely need to be eating more saturated fat, like coconut oil and butter.

That evening at dinner I sat with the conference chairman, Dr. Jeff Gladd, from Fort Wayne, Indiana. Dr. Gladd found integrative medicine after seeing the light and getting healthy himself a number of years ago. He puts his rapid weight loss mainly down to his switch to a paleo diet. When I asked him how to get more fat easily, he said two words I hadn’t heard used before together: “Bulletproof Coffee.”

This recipe is the brainchild of Dave Asprey, founder of the “Bulletproof Executive.” Dr. Gladd said that not only had he lost a lot of weight, but it also gets him through all the way to lunch (or further) with no hunger pangs and his focus and work performance was razor sharp. It sounded like it would be worth trying.
The first time you hear the ingredients, it might not sound that appetizing, but I have to say I’ve been having them for breakfast for three weeks, and they're delicious. My version tastes just like a creamy coconut latte.
You can see the original recipe and all of the details on the Bulletproof executive website, but here is my modified version (with the ingredients I already had in my apartment).

Ingredients:
  • 12 ounces hot brewed coffee (made with a French press)
  • 1 Tbsp grass-fed butter
  • 2 Tbsp coconut oil
  • 1 tsp raw cacao
Directions:
Put all the ingredients in a blender and mix.
You can start with less butter and oil and work your way up.
So far, I have lost weight and felt sharper! Have you tried it?
